Sometimes less really is more. That’s how I feel about these light, airy images from a recent styled shoot by Kayla Barker. Like a breath of clean air, just pure, simple beauty. In the wedding world, it’s easy to get caught up in all of the details, from flowers to layers of décor, and don’t get me wrong, I love every adorned, swathed, beaded bit of it, but isn’t it nice sometimes to just focus on one thing? To appreciate a beautiful lace dress, or a pretty face without too much makeup, a perfect bridal bouquet, a clean, white-washed space with a simple chandelier.
It’s that time of year when we’re reminded to take a moment to be grateful, and I’m feeling especially thankful for some of the simple things. It might be something to keep in mind as you are planning a wedding as well. Even if you are going crazy with the details, try to at least pause long enough to enjoy each one! Maybe you don’t need every last thing on your wish list…maybe enough is more than enough. You are in love, family and friends will be celebrating with you…everything else is, as they say, icing on the cake.

Thank you to the amazing team who created this shoot.
When I am trying to make sense of senseless things, I find venturing outside helps open a space for peace …feeling the wind in my hair, and the spray of the vast ocean on my skin is like a soothing salve for the spirit. I suppose it is the vastness and majesty of this earth, the miracle that is this planet that holds life itself, unfolding ages before us, and continuing long after we are just a memory. Sometimes when things seem just too difficult to comprehend, nature is my salvation.
For me, these images by Katch Silva touch on this beauty and power. The contrast of light and dark, the ancient metaphor of the cave, and all of the pain, turmoil and growth that come from the dark mysteries of life, and then into the warm light of the fields, the soothing touch of an afternoon breeze, and a sense of freedom in the sunshine.
Finally, into the clear blue ocean, where all life began. A blue so blue and vast, that it makes whatever problem feel small and maybe not so overwhelming.
I know these are images of wedding gowns, and are meant to show the detail of the lace, the graceful curves of the imagined bride-to-be who will wear them, but perhaps because they also show the splendor of our earth, they take on a greater significance in my mind. In any case, thank you Katch for your beautiful work, and for revealing something beyond what the eye can see.

I’m so happy to share this People exclusive video from Jennie Garth’s wedding:
I love creating a custom gown, and working with Jennie was so much fun! She wanted something a bit non-traditional, but utterly romantic…just my kind of bride! As I do with all of my custom clients, we started by having Jennie try on some of the gowns in my collection. She narrowed it down to these three:
She loved the skirt and fit of Raven, and was considering the black (maybe to match that STUNNING black diamond of hers!), but when she saw Heart’s Desire, that floral embroidery on the ivory tulle, and the back of this dress really stole her heart (ha, pun!). But the whole time, she kept saying, “the blue, I want to try the blue!” and that was Eden. She loved the gold, the touch of sparkle, and yes, the blue silk, so when I suggested we combine the skirt of Raven, the embroidery of Heart’s Desire, layered over the gold sparkle and blue silk of Eden, that was it! I did a very quick working sketch to show her what I meant, and then began her dress.
The illusion neckline and gold thread woven through the delicate lace framed the silhouette and really gave a soft vintage feeling to the gown.
Working on a custom gown is truly a collaborative process, and one where I really spend time getting to know my client, thinking about what will make her look beautiful, and maybe even surprising her with something she may not have thought of before. I can only accept a few custom clients per year, as the process is quite involved and does require several trips to LA here at The Castle from the first design consultation to the final dress fitting. Sometimes coordinating my travel schedule with my busy clients’ calendar can be a challenge, but we make it work!
I am beyond honored that Jennie chose me to design her garden wedding dress, and I wish her, Dave, and her lovely daughters much love.
Now I’m running out to get my copy of People to see more pretty pics!
