It was “Butterflies for Charity” as Claire Pettibone donated Butterflies by Claire Pettibone to the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Accessories for Success Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show held at the Beverly Hills Hotel on April 27th, 2010.

“As the mother of a young daughter, children are my top priority,” said Claire, “so I am so happy to support a cause that does so much for kids today. A great role model for a child is one of the best gifts you can give them.”

Organizers of the event report that this was the most successful in history. The silent auction which included Butterflies among the donations up for bid, generated over $110,000 for their mentoring programs, four times more than any other Accessories for Success event in the past.

Among the 400 women and men celebrating the mentoring programs were celebrities Amber Valletta, Shirley MacLaine, Sidney Poitier, Jackie Collins, Norm Crosby, Sarah Purcell and Jo Anne Worley.

In interviews with the designers, and through 300 color illustrations, author and trend expert, Dominy, reveals the process and influences that shape the color, silhouettes and detail of each designer piece. Designers share how diverse inspirations such as 1930s Berlin, childhood ballet lessons, or the French cinema have influenced their work.

Claire discusses styling, favorite designs and the global market of lingerie, including the introduction of her designer collection in the 1990s. “At the time we launched our business,” says Pettibone in the book, “European lingerie was very special but extremely expensive once imported to the U.S. Most American companies were producing very bland, utilitarian products. I wanted to offer an exquisite, vintage-inspired collection to the American market. I reintroduced many of the lost techniques (such as handmade ribbon flowers and vintage lace patterns) that I’d found on antique pieces, but updated them for the modern woman.”

Dominy discusses how the trend towards lingerie designers being based outside of the traditional fashion capitals will evolve as fashion finds new hotspots and enthusiastic markets worldwide. “We make everything in Los Angeles,” says Pettibone who is based  there. “We take great pride in being one of the few companies to support our local economy and still have things made in the U.S..”

Our best at-home date was when we had first moved in to our new home. We had just gotten married, so we didn’t have very much. Our heat was broken, so we lay in front of the fire on our blow-up mattress and ordered pizza.
